A Long But Important Post Regarding Future Plans

Posted by ChazDude - September 1st, 2019

Hey there, everyone! As in 2017 and 2018, welcome to my annual end-of-summer update. Without further ado, why don't y'all dive right in...

POTATOMAN IGNITED:

As you're likely aware, Chapter 5 of Potatoman Ignited comes out in six days time! As you can see from the new banner, the sixth and final chapter shall drop on the first of November! This final chapter (which also happens to be Dave & Carl #1000) brings Ignited, and the whole Potatoman trilogy, to a close.

As of the beginning of this week I've started work on the sixth chapter, and by the time you read this, all the action-y scenes should be complete (hope I didn't just drop any spoilers there, haha). We're in the final stretch now, ladies n' laddies!

THE FUTURE OF DAVE & CARL:

This section takes up the majority (or at least plurality) of this post, so bear with me.

First of all, prior to the release of PI Chapter 6 I've produced a six-page D&C Halloween miniseries, which I'll be releasing between the 22nd and 30th of October. Now, on to the important bits...

Months ago I decided that post-November 1st is going to be relatively quiet, by which I mean I think the time has come for me to take a break from the main comic series. Before you panic, no; Dave & Carl is NOT ending, I simply thought I needed some time off. I'll likely still draw stuff in this period (Inktober comes to mind) but I've already drawn the last regular length comics to be released prior to #1000. In addition, I'm taking the opportunity of this break to nail down some IRL stuff. On that note, once the break is over, I am planning to cut the regular comics from thrice a week to just one. Why? Well...apart from the aforementioned IRL stuff (like finding a job for example) the other reason is that I've got to the point where I feel I should go more for quality over quantity. When I come back from this break, don't expect any more comics like this or this. Before you despair, this decision could also free up more space for non-comic art. We'll see how it goes, I guess.

Essentially, Dave & Carl will go on hiatus during November and December 2019. Come January 2020, D&C will return with a somewhat-revamped feel to it. New logo, redone character bios, updated credits template and so on. With the coincidence of D&C #1000, a new year AND a new decade, is there no better opportunity for a lil' soft-rebooting? On the topic of comics, over the course of the past few months I've been writing up the next long-comic story, which comes out next year. It's not exactly Dave & Carl-heavy, but like Potatoman, it's in the same universe. I can't wait to get it out there, and I'm sure that neither can you!

I foresee that there'll still be a long comic from me at least every few months or so, including within any 'one-a-week' schedule.

OTHER STUFF:

Commissions?

I'm open to the idea of going down this route. I'm not sure if my art style warrants this, but if there are any people out there who are willing to commission me, even if it's just stuff like caricatures, I could step up to it. I'm open to any hints/suggestions on this topic.

Animation?

I've been rather lazy on this front. In the past few months I've only opened Flash for animation like...once or twice? Part of me hopes that the one-comic-week-regime might also free up more animation time? I'm not making any guarantees, but we'll see how things go...

That's all I can think of to write about just now. So yeah...enjoy the comics, prepare for the end of Ignited, and don't worry, I'm sure that two month holiday won't be too much of a disruption for you.

Okay...bye now.

Sounds like a good game plan going forward, good luck in the job search! As for commissions, I guess if you showcased some of your better panels into a larger piece w/ contact info and prices, might help some. Best wishes as always!

No reason you cant do commissions, I’m sure a lot of people like your style. Use your personal judgement for prices and be willing to make accommodations for what your costumers want.

Twas posted here too huh. :) Good luck again with the break, and looking forward to what comes after!

Just gotta second that commission thing too. Would love to see that aforementioned spin-off come to fruition.
